Arrrrr! The Gasparilla Pirate Invasion

Hello everyone!

It is a beautiful evening here in Tampa after an especially warm day. I keep hearing how miserable the winter is in Pittsburgh, and am grateful we picked this year to move down here. Hope you all are staying warm and hanging in there.

Last weekend was the Gasparilla Festival here in Tampa: a made-up holiday about a pirate invasion of the city that never happened. Still, it is a long-held tradition - the first parade starting in 1904, and the whole city participates. You've never seen so many people dressed as pirates in your whole life.

Note: Glenn didn't get a lot of pics of the pirates - so I stole these from a local news site...but seriously - the best pirate costumes ever.

We also weren't there earlier in the day when the armada attacked Tampa, but it looked pretty impressive.

This is the Jose Gasparilla, a ship built especially for the festivities in 1954. You may remember we visited this ship in a different location when we first moved down here.

There was also a big parade full of floats where people tossed beads and chocolate coins into the crowd.

Kinda hard to tell, but this is a giant castle float in front of a building. Everyone at the top of the float is dressed like a king.
We didn't stay long at the parade. It was a pretty day and we spent most of our time sitting by the water.

Mom and Dad, you may recognize that this is out front of Jackson's.

So anyway, that's about it for Gasparilla. It was fun and amazing to see the whole city turn out for one event. However, it was a bit on the wild side - lots of drunken pirates dancing in the street. We left before sundown.

We close on the new house on Friday, and have been signing, scanning and emailing documents like crazy people. This coming weekend we'll be moving the Pod into the new house, so we can finally see all the stuff we've been living without for the past 8 months.

Wish us luck that this move is better than the last one, and that no one tries to punch Glenn in the face. Love to you all!
